Effective Golf Course Natural Disaster Restoration

Some golf course owners are lucky enough to never have to deal with the results of a natural disaster. However, it’s clear that many golf courses will be in need of services related to natural disaster restoration eventually.

Effective Golf Course Natural Disaster Restoration

Managing After a Disaster

It’s no one’s fault when something like this happens. There is really only so much that anyone can do in order to prepare golf courses for a natural disaster. No one knows how bad a given weather event is going to be in advance. The best way to cope with natural disasters is to just make arrangements for natural disaster restoration when necessary.

Crucial Services

Golf courses are full of wide and open spaces. Some of the trees that have been planted throughout golf courses could get destroyed during a storm, and the golf course owners will need to do something about all of the debris.

Water pumping can be a particularly valuable service for the golf course owners who want to minimize the long-term damages associated with the natural disaster in question. Natural disasters can also cause damage in unexpected ways, and it’s important to survey the entire golf course in order to get a sense of exactly what happened after one of these calamities.

Genuine Renewal

Some golf course owners might worry that their golf courses will never be the same after a major storm. However, there is no reason to assume that this will be the case. If golf course owners work with the right services, they should be able to make it seem as if the disastrous event never even occurred.

It’s possible that some of these companies will even manage to make the golf course look better than it did just before the natural disaster, making the course look genuinely new again.

Effective and Efficient – Golf Course Tee Laser Leveling

The location from where we commence our game.  The scene of our opening play.  The zone where we plot out and make our most important shot for the hole.  Where we get another opportunity to drive it as far and as precise as possible.  Each tee presents a new, blank score box. And along with it, new opportunities for golfers to improve their game and drop strokes. Each tee also presents new opportunities for the golf course to impress its golfers, and help create satisfied and regular paying customers.

Effective and Efficient - Golf Course Tee Laser Leveling

The fact is, tees invariably become uneven and run-down as the result of heavy traffic, divot depressions, and surface resettling.  And all too often, those problems are overlooked. Particularly when viewed in comparison with their counterparts at the other end of the fairway – the greens. This is where the importance of tee leveling comes in. The tee exists in the spotlight and sets the stage for some of the most dramatic shots of the game.  It is imperative to the success of the golfer and ultimately the golf course that it possesses a smooth, level surface in order to ensure a balanced, level stance, swing and delivery.

The more traditional methods of tee leveling involved the use of I-beams, tractors and grader boxes, and depending on size, might result in the hole or the entire course closing down for weeks to months.  It was inefficient, expensive and often inaccurate. We at Fusion Golf understand the needs of the golf course owner, and the importance in minimizing this impact to the club and guests.  And we have an alternative.

With our specialized equipment and years of experience, we are able to utilize a less time-consuming, less labor-intensive, less-expensive, and more accurate alternative – Laser Tee Leveling. Using a laser controlled automated grading machine, a skilled laser operator is capable of leveling the average tee in a mere 45-75 minutes.  Moreover, the degree of accuracy is unmatched, producing results within +- ¼ inch.

Thanks to laser tee leveling, rebuilding and maintaining tees has now become easy. Please contact us today for more detailed information about how we may help you in the development of your project.

Happy Driving!

The Importance of Golf Course Renovation

It is important to always keep a golf course in good condition. It is necessary to always attract customers and to stay competitive. Over the course of the lifetime of the golf facility, it is sometimes necessary to renovate the course. There are a variety of reasons why it is necessary to perform golf course renovations and it isn’t always to repair problems.

The Importance of Golf Course Renovation

The course owner may have several renovations in mind to help enhance the playing experience. It is important to have a golf course architect or design specialist evaluate the course, taking into account the desires of the owner. It is recommended to perform an overall course analysis first as any change will affect most of the course.

Renovating the golf course from time to time will keep play fresh and challenging for experienced players and encouraging for less skilled players. Renovations may also provide uniform playing conditions while upgrading some areas. As golf course construction technology advances, providing renovations on a fairly regular basis will allow for an upgrade in work that may allow for less intense maintenance methods.

Golf course renovations will allow for an upgrade in planting and enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the course. Renovations may include removing overgrowth and inappropriate vegetation and replacing with vegetation that may require less maintenance. Such a task will also allow for tees, greens and bunkers to be refurbished and replace grass and/or sod that may be failing.

An important part of golf course renovations may be to replace or repair irrigation systems. Healthy grass or sod is an important part of the aesthetic value of any golf course and a part of the reason players keep returning. It is important to keep in mind that keeping the membership informed about the renovations will go a long way dictating the success of the project.

For more information about golf course renovations, please contact us and let one of our professionals guide you through the process.

Three Points to Consider in Golf Course Bridge Construction

“Boy, I sure do love it when golf course bridge construction is as complicated as possible,” said no one ever. Here are three key points to consider before construction begins to make this project easier.

Three Points to Consider in Golf Course Bridge Construction

Functional Design

Whether you want a copy of Swilcan Bridge from Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, or a custom-made bridge for your site, make sure the bridge design accommodates the traffic that will be crossing it. If it’s a bridge just for walkers it doesn’t need to be as wide or as structurally reinforced as a bridge intended for golf cart traffic.  Flat, arched, or even hollow tunnel bridges enhance a golf course, but make sure you consider the history and shape of the course when you choose your bridge design.

Quality Materials and Construction

The bridge itself can be constructed from a variety of materials the most common being wood and concrete. Quality stone, composite materials, and metals are also good choices. Make sure you select quality materials that blend naturally with your course and enhance its beauty. Care should be taken during construction to make sure the walkway prevents slipping and tripping.

Structural Integrity and Location

Structural requirements are determined by building codes and experienced designers will make sure local building codes are met. When choosing a location make sure the terrain in the area is able to support the type of bridge you want to build. When selecting the best location for the bridge the biggest concerns are the natural flow of traffic, environmental habitats, natural hazards, and aesthetics.

Golf course bridges add charm and a functional beauty to your golf course. With a regular maintenance program and inspections, your golf course bridge will stay in great shape for years to come. Fusion Golf LTD is an international golf construction company that would like to share our expertise with you and help you build a golf course bridge that will last a lifetime.

Hurricane Andrew Wrecks Florida In ’92 And Forces Natural Disaster Restoration

A hurricane is one of the most destructive natural disasters that people in the world have to deal with every year. A hurricane is a powerful storm that starts out far in the ocean and turns into a circulating air mass that spits winds over 100 miles per hour and a ton of rain. Sometimes, hurricanes destroy houses and property well after the bad part of the storm has torn through town including golf courses.

Hurricane Andrew Wrecks Florida In '92 And Forces Natural Disaster Restoration

When the storm hits, the weather stations usually give a warning in advance and the hurricane’s winds are usually the most destructive part. After the hurricane goes through an area, the area sometimes continues to get large amounts of rain causing a flooding issue. Hurricanes can also cause a coastal surge, meaning that the ocean water level rises up on the coastline.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall in South Florida on August 24, 1992 and was one of the most destructive cyclones that have ever hit the U.S. Hurricane Andrew took out over 25,000 homes and damaged over 100,000 more. The estimated costs in damages for Hurricane Andrew were over $26 billion.

Before the storm hit the government warned everyone and evacuated people all over Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. Over one million people evacuated from the Florida Keys, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.

At the time researchers thought that the fastest winds recorded were in the 140 mph range but new data in 2012 came out that the wind speeds of Hurricane Andrew reached over 160 mph officially making it a Category 5 hurricane. In the Biscayne Beach area, the average coastal water surge was 4 to 6 feet, but at the Burger King Headquarters, the water rose over 16 feet.

Hurricane Andrew first hit Southern Florida then shot up north into other parts of the country. Hammond, Louisiana recorded the highest rainfall amount at almost a foot of rain. The storm, directly and indirectly, killed 66 people and left hundreds of thousands temporarily homeless. When the next storm hits, contact us to help you with natural disaster restoration.

A Serious Golf Course Has Level Tee Boxes

Having an irregular tee box can dramatically impact a player’s performance by causing them to overthink or, worse, miscalculate their swing. As a result, it can affect their overall satisfaction with a course. Over time, without proper maintenance through tee leveling, several things can cause a rough tee box (and, thus, require leveling):

  • It has become domed/sloped – generally due to improper compaction when built
  • It has become dished – the current fill material below the tee is sinking or the box has repeatedly not been edged properly
  • It is bumpy – too many divot repairs, part of the natural course of play
  • It is uneven – A repair done to part of the tee, possibly with too much loam, or an unskilled raker

A Serious Golf Course Has Level Tee Boxes

Old methods of repairing tees often meant completely reconstructing the box, thus taking it out of commission for a large chunk of time. In the process, courses were forced to rely on heavy machinery, resulting in inconsistent compaction. However, a new method, laser leveling, can easily and affordably keep the tee boxes as beautiful as the rest of the course.

Using light-weight, laser-controlled machines to level can do the work, more precisely, in a fraction of the time. Although the goal it have a flat, even tee box, a 0% grade is not the goal. To ensure proper drainage on low-cut grass, a 1% grade is recommended. Thanks to the laser controlled machines, however, the result is an even surface (+- 1/4 inch) so the grade is not visibly noticed by, or distracting to, a golfer.

In addition to making the tee boxes look fantastic, laser leveling saves money on labor (one skilled machine operator). It saves time, as well, since the repaired tee boxes are usable, faster (average of about an hour). Future maintenance is also a snap, with minimal annual top dressing (also with a laser). And, perhaps most importantly, many players feel restored, laser-leveled tees actually play better than new. Not to mention, well-maintained tee boxes are a frequently talked about feature.

Overall, laser leveling makes both current repairs and future maintenance cheaper, faster, and easier. The result will be a beautiful course and, more importantly, one golfers talk about, from start to finish. Contact us, today, to learn more about our methods and how we can help laser level your tees, today.

Cart Paths: An Important Element of Every Successful Golf Course

Golf courses roll, turn, and twist; they are hilly, flat, have ponds, and, often times, areas of forest. The intricacy of golf courses makes the game fun. It brings new levels of depth to every shot; every hole is a different experience. But, all of these twists and turns and ups and downs make having a solid cart path of vital importance to any golf course. Over our years of working with courses, we have seen many courses abandon their cart paths, leaving them cracked and crumbled. We are hoping that this article shifts your attention to the importance of having an adequate cart path system.Cart Paths: An Important Element of Every Successful Golf Course

Navigating the Terrain

Cart paths have a single goal in mind; conveniently getting golfers across the course. Being able to ride a golf cart across a beautifully constructed concrete path may not seem like it’s the most important part of the golfing experience, but when it isn’t there it’s very noticeable.

Protecting the Course

Every golfer knows the “Cart Path Only” sign, but not every golfer knows why it’s there. Cart paths help protect the golf course from the golf carts as well as protect golfers from the course. This usually happens when the course it too wet, though high-traffic seasons can also warrant it. Cart paths allow you to protect your course and maintain balanced traffic during peak seasons.

Why Fusion Golf?

Whether you need rolled or blocked curbing, Fusion Golf has the expertise to handle any cart construction project. We specialize in golf course construction, and that gives us insight into how and where to lay cart paths on golf courses. Regular paving companies may be able to provide concrete and labor, but they don’t have the industry experience and know-how when it comes to the design of a golf course. Over the years, we have worked with countless American golf courses as well as dozens domestically. From Germany and Sweden to China, we have worked on projects across the globe. We live and breathe golf courses, and, luckily, we also happen to know a thing or two about paving. We ensure that every cart path has proper drainage as well as adequate thickness and appropriate subgrade compaction. Not to mention, our cart paths are simply beautiful. This is one of those situations where we are going to let our pictures speak for themselves.

Signs a Golf Course Needs Renovation

As a superintendent of a golf course, you watch over it every single day. While the grass may grow, it sometimes seems like nothing else really ever changes. However, that’s not true. While the diligent maintenance of a superintendent slows down wear, it still happens and if you look at the same course every day, you can tend to miss it. However, what are some signs that it might be time for a little renovation?

Signs a Golf Course Needs Renovation

Antiquated Design

Golf course design is constantly evolving, but since the early 00’s, the design has made quite the change. No longer are the faux mounds and other flashy additions to the course in fashion, but rather now people prefer a simpler, natural look to their courses. If your course was designed in the 1980’s for 1980’s golf tastes, it is well beyond time to update.

Common Course Problems

Every superintendent knows that one area of their course where drainage is an issue or they have that one area that gets so much traffic that they have to replace the turf twice as much as anywhere else. If your course has issues that are a maintenance issue, perhaps it is time to work smarter instead of harder. Certainly you can continue to deal with these issues, or you could plan a renovation that finally fixes them.

Loss of Player Base

The issue with golf courses that don’t undergo at least some renovation every five to ten years is that they often see a drop off of their core player base. Perhaps your player base is of an older sort and they no longer want to deal with walking the large hills of your course or your core player base is simply grown bored with playing the same course year after year. If your customers are starting to dwindle, it may be time to shake things up a little.

Are you a superintendent considering a renovation of your golf course? Perhaps you are just looking to fix some of the common problems that it faces every day. Regardless, if you are looking to breathe new life into an old golf course, contact us today to see what Fusion Golf can do for you.

Golf Course Bridge Construction: Tips For Buyers

A well-constructed bridge can be a wonderful addition to your golf course. Are you thinking of making a new investment? There are some important things to consider before you start to build.

Golf Course Bridge Construction: Tips For Buyers

Appropriate Design

A well-designed golf course is easily tarnished with a poorly designed bridge. If you don’t take the time to consider the aesthetic of your course, the new addition can easily take away from the intended atmosphere.

The material you use, the structure of the bridge, and the method of installation will all have an impact on your final results. Take the time to give your new bridge the attention it deserves. It’s never too late to ask for the help of a professional, as well!

Is It Budget Safe?

Before stepping too far into the design phase, be sure the new addition is both necessary and affordable. Research local zoning ordinances to ensure the construction meets legal standards. Some structures may require you to purchase a permit to build.

Environmental Impact

Always scope the installation site for critical environmental factors. You’ll need to ensure your new structure is optimized for the landscape without causing a negative impact. Avoid materials made from harsh chemicals which may affect local plant and wildlife.

However, we also need to look for environmental factors that are working against us. For example, running water will erode the construction over time. Humid environments have considerable effects on untreated wood.

Making A Decision

If you’re still not sure where to begin with your new bridge design, you may want to consider the help of a professional. It’s imperative to look for experienced golf course experts in your area. These experts know the local climate better than anyone and can tell you exactly what you need to get started.
